Summary:
Swordsmanship, the modern term for sword fighting, refers to the skills of an individual in the art of the sword. These days it is often associated with Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), also known as the Western Martial Arts (WMA).
This is considered a form of martial arts as it requires hand techniques, footwork, and a type of sword to encompass the movements. In the past, swordsmanship was used mostly for war or amusement. In the modern age, Western Martial Arts have all but died out, and new styles have emerged, such as fencing.
Many civilizations and regions throughout the world incorporated swordsmanship into territorial wars and disputes in the past. Today, some branches of martial arts allow sword combat, and some academies teach Western Martial Arts around the world.
