Summary:

Greco-Roman wrestling originated in France after the Franco-Prussian War in the eighteenth century. Jean Exbrayat, the Napoleonic soldier, is credited with the formation of this style. He called it flat hand wrestling to distinguish it from other forms and set the rules to forbid holds below the waist. Emphasis is put on throws and the combatant’s overall performance. The sport first appeared in the modern Olympics in 1896. Although it continues to stand alone in many practices, its fusion into the mixed martial arts boom is apparent.
